Moms love handmade gifts, don’t they? They appreciate the time and thought that goes into a hand-knit item. They are happy to know that you’ve spent time thinking of them and working on something special just for them. So, it is only natural that instead of buying a generic box-store gift, you put some lovely yarn on the needles and whip up something special just for mom.
Here are three free patterns moms are sure to appreciate. Customize them to her liking by selecting yarn in her favorite color.
Pattern 1: Reyna shawl by Noora Laivola

The Reyna shawl is designed by Noora Laivola and is available as a free download on Ravelry. This shawl is rated highly on Ravelry, and it is easy to see why. It is a great openwork pattern that showcases your favorite fingering weight yarn. I recommend using Belle by Artfil, which comes in a variety of lovely colors. Because it is a shawl, one-size-fits-most, which is always a plus. Shawls are also timeless wardrobe additions that look great with so many outfits and are really practical for Spring’s unpredictable weather. This works up nicely on size 4 knitting needles, though you could size up or down depending on your desired size/look.
Pattern 2: Simple House Slippers by Simone Alexandra

This great free pattern from The Temple of Knit website is for Simple House Slippers, designed by Simone Alexandra. These slippers are so simple and classic. While the design is similar to something grandmas knit years ago, modern yarn choices can provide an updated twist. I recommend using Mericana DK from Artfil, though any similar DK yarn will do. They are worked up on size 6 or 7 knitting needles and can be made in an evening or two. A really cute idea would be to make matching or coordinating pairs for you and your mom (or grandmas and granddaughters, etc.)
Pattern 3: The Almost Lost Washcloth by Julie Tarsha
The Almost Lost Washcloth from Simply Notable is such a fun, easy knit that is a twist on a classic garter-stitch washcloth. Made from worsted or aran-weight cotton yarn and size 8 knitting needles, this is a quick knit that mom will love to use. Because it works up fairly quickly, I suggest knitting up a few of these lovelies and wrapping them together with a nice bar or bottle of soap as an extra-special spa-like gift. I love the idea of using a common color scheme for the washcloths, such as neutrals, beachy colors, or different shades of the same color.
Now, if you want to make a gift for mom but don’t want to spend time selecting the right pattern and yarn, you can always go with one of our knitting kits, such as the gorgeous Mary’s Shawlette kit, which has lovely lace trim detail or the Essential Tote kit, which will be sure to be a much-loved accessory.
Of course, whatever route you take, mom will love the effort and thought that you put into knitting her a gift from the heart.
