Free Pattern: Basic Hat. Jane's Knitting Kits

 

Notes: 

This pattern is written in 2 different gauges: Hat A is 2 sts per inch for super bulky yarn and Hat B is 4 sts per inch for worsted weight yarn. It is a BEGINNER project: A simple rolled brim hat, knitted flat, and sewn up the side. You do not have to knit in the round, or switch to double pointed needles.

Finished Size:

It is written in two sizes, a unisex adult medium (19.5”) and unisex adult large (20.5”)

Materials needed:

For hat A – Approx 70 yards super bulky yarn (8 sts x 11 rows=4” in St st), US size 17 needles (or size to obtain gauge), yarn needle.
For hat B – Approx 125 yards worsted weight yarn (4 sts x 6 rows in St. st), US size 9 needles (or size to obtain gauge), yarn needle.

Hat A Instructions:

Cast on 40 (42) sts. Work in St. st. for 7” (7.5”) ending on a ws row. Begin decreases: Row 1: (K2, K2tog)* Repeat across row. (Large size will end K2) 30 (32) sts remain. Row 2: Purl
Row 3: (K1, K2tog)* repeat across row. (Large size will end K2) 20 (22) sts remain. Row 4: Purl
Row 5: K2 together across row 10 (11) sts. remain.
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: K2 tog across row. (Large size will end K1) 5 (6) sts remain.
Cut yarn, leaving at least 12” tail. Use a yarn needle and thread end through stitches on needle. Remove needle and pull stitches tight. Sew down side with remaining yarn. Weave in ends.

Hat B Instructions:

Cast on 78 (82) sts. Work in St. st. for 7” (7.5”) ending on a ws row. Begin decreases:
Row 1: (K4, K2tog)* Repeat across row. (Large size will end K4) 65(69) sts remain. Row 2: Purl
Row 3: (K3, K2tog)* repeat across row. (Large size will end K4) 52 (56) sts remain. Row 4: Purl
Row 5: (K2, K2tog)* together across row 39(42) sts remain.
Row 6: Purl
Row 7: (K1, K2tog) across row 26, (28) sts. remain.
Row 8: Purl
Row 9: K2 Tog across row 13(14) sts. remain.

Cut yarn, leaving at least 12” tail. Use a yarn needle and thread end through stitches on needle. Remove needle and pull stitches tight. Sew down side with remaining yarn. Weave in ends.
